This is durometer which was developed to comply with JIS K 6253 (new JIS) ruled in 1993 to confirm ISO ( International Organization of Standard ). It consists of 3 types of durometer such as Type A for medium stiffness, Type D for high hardness and Type D for low hardness.
Type A which is main type tends to indicate higher figure by 1 or 2 points compared with conventional A hardness measurement. Type D is suitable for hard rubber of which measured figure by Type A 90 and above and Type E is suitable for soft rubber of which measured figure is below 20.

In case there unevenness on the measured face, less flat face because of irregular shape and deep bump at the bottom, depressed face of durometer is difficult to reach and sometimes accurate measurement is not possible.
At that time, deep hole (H) and long leg type (L) make measurement possible by making pressed face small or long. Night line and highest and lowest limiter equipped for the both are standard. Then, long leg type complies with DIN 53505.

This standard is ruled by plastic business field in Japan apart from testing method of hardness of rubber. This is basically equal to JIS K 6253 of durometer , as only its round up method of spring load figure etc. is different. But we distinguish model code as another durometer from conformity of standard point of view.

JIS K 6301 which had been established in 1950 and sustaining the base of rubber industry in Japan was discontinued in 1998 after the suspended period, as it was not in conformity with ISO, and JIS K 6253 was newly established. However, it was used for 50 years as rubber hardness measurement and is still used as test data agreed between concerned persons even now when it is progressed to shift to new JIS and the standard is discontinued. There are 2 kinds of A type for general rubber and C type for hard rubber.

SRIS was discontinued.
Now, there is type E durometer in accordance with NEW JIS, but the standard to measure hardness of soft rubber like eraser was not available in the previous JIS standard. Then this SRIS 0101 was established by Japan Rubber Association for the purpose of ruling standard of the Association apart from JIS. As is half ball type osibari this is suitable for soft material like soft rubber (expanded rubber ), hardness of spool of textile and film roll to which osibari sticks if it is type A durometer. It also conforms to JIS S 6050 gplastic letter distinguisherh (eraser) .

ASTM (AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS ) was historically old and various types of durometer are ruled. ISO applies durometer of type A and Type D among this standard and they are ruled in JIS standard.

This is available as TECLOCK original durometers based on customersf requirement, even though they are not ruled in JIS or ISO. Type E 2 durometer with around half of sponge spring load figure of type E, and type FO to measure hardness of polystyrene sponge for the level of sponge washing dishes are available.
Measurement example
Hardness is being measured by placing GS-744 G on the sponge sheet. Dispersion of polystyrene level can be judged.

This is a oil pressure type measuring instrument by load of constant speed / pressure ,which has dissolved personal difference by load pressure to measure rubber hardness. Each durometer of type A, E,B,O SRIS with fixing around 1kg weight and type D, DO, C with fixing 4kg weight can measure by static loading around 5kg.
These load figures are indicated in ISO, JIS, ASTM.
